Effective Integration of Technology Into K-12 Curriculum

The Problem
School systems are spending hundreds of millions of dollars on technology. Yet, most of this technology is not used effectively. Why? While many teachers may know how to turn on and use computers, send email and surf the
Internet, they’ve never been trained to integrate technology to deliver the curriculum they are required to teach.

The result? Boring lectures, tuned-out students, the continuance of high dropout rates in urban schools, and no connection between IT spending and student achievement.

The Solution
Leveraging decades of experience working with IT organizations, JDL spent 4 years developing this ground-breaking new segment of its business, developing a unique, completely customized solution for integrating technology into lesson plans and classrooms.

At the heart of the program, job-embedded professional development and project-based learning address the needs of teachers and students who wish to use computers and the Internet infrastructure provided by IT departments to increase learning skills and improve student achievement. Through carefully crafted projects and activities, our staff developers work with teachers and students in the classroom, modeling lessons, demonstrating how to address standards, teaching curriculum, generating student products that demonstrate learning, and integrating technology into everyday classroom activities. They work in a classroom with as few as one computer, or in a 1-to-1 computing environment.

Getting the technology into a lesson plan is difficult for most teachers, who also must worry about alignment with the approved curriculum. JDL has developed On-Line Lesson Plans (OLLP) and can customize plans for your district.

We’ve had tremendous success. Our training and OLLP are in use in many schools throughout New York City as well as schools in other major cities nationwide. Pre and post-work survey assessments make it easier to apply for and obtain funding from ESEA/NCLB entitlement grants and other federal programs. JDL has grant developers on staff to assist you.

Horizons Professional Development Program
Your introduction to our ground-breaking practice can happen at the scale of your choice. We offer fully customized curriculum planning and technology integration training throughout many classrooms and schools at one time. You might choose to begin with a pilot program in just one school and a few classrooms: a useful and inexpensive way to
determine applicability with your existing professional development and curriculum enrichment programs. Our pilot can include an informal documented study developed and presented following the pilot to assist you with future grant funding applications. No purchase of software or curriculum is required with a pilot.
